Rideshare Insurance Is Designed to Confuse You

After a rideshare or delivery accident, you won't deal with one insurance company. You'll deal with several, each pointing at the other. The driver's personal insurer says the trip was commercial. The platform's third-party administrator says the driver was between rides. Meanwhile, your medical bills keep arriving.

Coverage depends entirely on the app period at the moment of the crash:

• App off: Only the driver's personal auto policy applies.
• App on, waiting for a request: Limited contingent coverage from the platform (typically $50,000 per person / $100,000 per accident for Uber and Lyft).
• En route to pickup or on a trip: Uber and Lyft carry $1 million commercial liability policies, plus contingent comprehensive, collision, and UM/UIM coverage.

Injured While Driving for a Platform?

Many of our clients drive for Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, or Instacart, often as their primary income. If that's you, know this:

• You can recover even as the driver: from the at-fault driver's insurer, the platform's contingent coverage, and UM/UIM policies.
• Your lost gig income counts: We document trip history, weekly earnings, and platform bonuses to prove lost income that insurers otherwise ignore, with help from our accounting-trained staff.
• Don't talk to the platform's administrator alone: When Sedgwick or another third-party administrator calls "just to get your statement," their job is to limit what the platform pays. Refer them to your attorney.

Passengers and Third Parties

If you were a rideshare passenger, or were struck by a rideshare or delivery driver while in your own car, on a bike, or on foot, the platform's commercial policy is often available to you, and it's usually far larger than a personal auto policy. We identify the active insurance period, preserve the app data, and pursue every applicable policy.

What to Do After a Rideshare or Delivery Accident

• Call 911: Report the accident and get medical attention, even if injuries seem minor.
• Screenshot the app: The trip screen, timestamps, and ride details are evidence of the active insurance period.
• Document everything: Photos of the scene, vehicles, injuries, and all driver and insurance information.
• Don't give a recorded statement: Not to the personal insurer, and not to the platform's administrator.
• Call an attorney early: App data and electronic records can disappear; preservation letters need to go out fast.
